Schools' competition registration

Registration is now open for the southern schools' debating competition for 2012!

Team registration may be undertaken using our online registration form. Registrations are due by 9am Thursday 1 March.

No formal registration evening will be held this year. However, an adjudicator training and harmonisation evening which coaches and coordinators may find useful will be held on February 15, and an exhibition debate on the evening of March 7.

Following the registration deadline, the fixture for the upcoming season will be made available on the TDU website by the commencement of school on the following Monday. The first debate round for this year is scheduled to be held on Wednesday 14 March.

Note on fees

Registrations must also include payment to be considered valid. A pro-forma invoice may be handed to your school's Bursar, and a cheque sent to the Tasmanian Debating Union or advice of EFT remittance sent to the Treasurer.

The fee schedule sets out the cost of registration for each Class, as well as the level of Postponement Bond. A Postponement Bond is an extra payment held by the TDU to cover fees owing in respect of a postponement through the season. If no postponement fees are incurred by a school, the Deposit can either be returned, or substracted from registration fees for subsequent years' debating competitions.

Class Registration fee Postponement bond
Novice $90 $15
Class 8 $90 $15
Class 9 $100 $20
Class 10 $135 $25
Class 12 $150 $25

Note on team numbers

Each school may enter as many teams as it wishes in any given age level. However, coaches should be aware that each school's teams in any given age level may be spread amongst the divisions. Although an individual team is not rostered to debate more often than once per fortnight, debates are held every week, with half of the teams competing one week, and the other competing on the alternate week. As a consequence, whilst effort will be made to minimise inconvenience, coaches cannot be assured that all of their teams will compete on the same night of the competition.

Although a team only needs to provide three (3) individual speakers and a Chair or Timekeeper on any given night of competition, experience suggests that any team that cannot call on at least five (5) students at the start of competition is likely to have difficulty fielding a team later in the season, especially in winter months.
